Sanyo Could Increase Blu-Ray Capacity

Just when you thought 50GB of storage space on a Blu-ray disc was phenomenal, along comes Sanyo with news that they could double that amount with Sanyo’s new blue laser diode that emits a beam of 450 milliwatts, making it powerful enough to write onto two additional data layers on a Blu-ray disc.
Sounds promising, but this technology will take at least a year or two to make it into mainstream consciousness. Interestingly enough, with this new diode technology, one is able to write faster at speeds of up to 12x, translated to an entire disc in just 10 minutes. Will this development cause physical media to stay around longer than it should?
