Manufacturers are addressing this by continually improving the efficiency of their chargers and in making it easier for consumers to pick the ones using the least energy. To help you save energy, a group of mobile manufacturers has launched a common energy rating system for chargers, making it easier for consumers to compare and choose the one that saves the most energy. The new rating system indicates how much energy each charger uses when left plugged into the wall socket after charging is completed.

It’s quickly becoming common knowledge that the efficiency of a charger plays a big role in the energy consumption of a device. Energy Star makes this very clear, and so does Motorola’s history in making efficient chargers for cell phones.

According to Reuters, “The [cell phone] industry has become the world’s top consumer electronics business by volume.” That means the energy wasted by crummy chargers is significant. And the industry’s manufacturers need to step up and fix this issue.

We got a chance to get our hands on Griffin’s new Simplifi desktop device recently and we feel they really got the name right on this one. The Simplifi is a small Swiss Army Knife of accessories packed into a smooth silver box that adds some convenience and maybe even a touch of sophistication to your desk.

For starters, the device is a dock and charger for your Apple iPhone and/or iPod. It has the docking port right on top and comes with little plastic adapters to custom fit every iPod ever made with a docking port. However, if you happen to have the iPhone 3G you might want to check the box for a 3G sticker. The original product does not come with a 3G port adapter (not that you necessarily need it for the dock to work), but it will save you from having to buy one separately for $1.99.

When will there be a way to recycle cell phone chargers?! I am so frustrated with this. I have recycled all old/damaged/out of date cell phones (save one gigantic one that is just too hilarious to let go of quite yet) and here I am stuck with all of the chargers. More recent ones find homes, but what about the oldies?

Sometimes going green can be a real pain. Take this green concept for instance. This iPhone hand grip charger will give you Hulk hands before you even get a full battery. Great for a hand workout, but you’d have to be pretty dedicated to your iPhone to stick with it.

This concept is called “You can work it out” and it was designed by Mac Funamizu, who must have huge beefy clown hands and an always working iPhone.

It would seem Ecosol has upgraded its PowerStick, at least cosmetically. The new slim down version has a more plastic feel to it, while holding the same amount of electric charge. We suppose this helps to lower the MSRP to $59.99, $10 less than before. For those who haven’t heard of the PowerStick, it’s essentially an all-in-one universal USB charger bundled with no less than 9 connectors to hook up to your iPhone, Palm Treo, BlackBerry or any portable electronics that feed power through a micro-USB or mini-USB connection. Most of us in reality would need to bring about 2 to 3 jacks on the go.
